This Sterling Silver Wairaka Charm can be worn one of 3 ways - thread it onto a neckchain to wear as a necklace; thread onto any bead style charm bracelet; or attach to a traditional charm bracelet. The choice is yours. It's really nicely detailed, and a wonderful souvenir of New Zealand. Wairaka or other wise known as 'The lady on the rock' is a bronze statue found at the mouth of the Whakatane River, it commemorates the bravery of Wairaka the daughter of Toroa, a Chief and captain of the Mataatua Waka. Wairaka rescued women left in the Waka from drifting out to sea when it was forbidden for women to handle Waka. She brought the Waka back to shore crying - "Kia Whakatane au i ahau - I will act the part of a man". Which is how the town got its name. The ring the Wairaka charm hangs from is a 5mm hole, so will fit all bead style charm bracelets.Proudly made in New Zealand.
